My fourth album, 'The Silver Ring', is the first I wrote which was entirely dedicated to one person, in this case, my partner Huguette! I wrote and recorded the songs during November and December 2017, with an 11 January 2018 album release in mind (Huguette's 22nd birthday).
I found that writing an album to one person about one general concept (my love for her, and our life together so far at that time) was quite difficult for me, because it limited my creative freedom somewhat-- lyrically especially. I had only arrived to Chile a couple of months earlier from Melbourne, in September 2017, to live with Huguette and her family. In fact, the first album I actually completed here in Chile is 'Heartstrings', the one preceding this album. Therefore, these two albums share similarities, and are musical twins (or siblings, at least!) of sorts, in my view.
In contrast to my first three albums, 'The Silver Ring' used my personal passion for creating and recording music to send a clear message to a particular person about how I felt. This put pressure on me somewhat, and I think this can be noticed, albeit subtly, in the slightly different musical style I ended up with on this album (more 'poppy' and simpler song structures than can be found in my previous), although the folk, reverb and melancholy elements are present as always, with high-flying treble melody leads, and earthy folk bass lines.
